Five Glens Falls firefighters and three Public Works staffers were commended Wednesday for administering life-saving care to a man in distress. Fire Chief James Schrammel described the incident in a letter to members of the Glens Falls Board of Public Safety:

“I am writing this letter to recognize five members of our department and three members of the Department of Public Works for their actions and the professionalism that resulted in a cardiac arrest reversal.

“On September 22, 2021, the on-duty (Fire Department) crew responded for a male down in the roadway. When the department personnel arrived on the scene, they found a male in cardiac arrest being given CPR by members of the Glens Falls Department of Public Works.

“The crew provided care in the form of both advanced and basic life support procedures, both at the scene and during transport to Glens Falls Hospital. The actions of the eight city employees, including CPR, intubation, cardiac monitoring, cardiac shock delivery, IO (interosseous) access, and administration of drugs, was the perfect utilization of EMS protocol.

“Assistant Chief Frederick Pettis, Firefighter Paul Callahan, Firefighter Benjamin Harrington, Firefighter Kyle Stonitsch, Firefighter Jacob Sauer-Jones and the three members of the Department of Public Works, Robert Girard, Jody Clark, and Tyrone Bapp, should all be recognized by the City for their actions and professionalism, as they made this cardiac reversal possible.

“In conclusion, the true measure of any city is the service it provides the community. The training and abilities of all these individuals, the immediate intervention by the members of the Department of Public Works, and the quick response by our department are a testament to the unfailing service provided to the residents of Glens Falls, which is something the City can be proud of.”
